Servant Leadership

In my view, servant leadership is about putting others’ needs before recognition and enabling people to be the best they can be. A servant leader is caring, humble, honest, and wants to help others achieve. Servant leaders don’t only lead by power, but inspire trust by serving together with the people they lead.

During my nursing career, I have practiced servant leadership by assisting women and families through one of the most important moments of their lives. As a labor and delivery nurse, I know that all patients deserve compassionate care, emotional support, and polite communication no matter their circumstances. Having delivered babies, I’ve learned the importance of listening, of being an advocate, and of staying calm under pressure.

One of the most important leadership experiences has been mentoring new staff and collaborating with interdisciplinary healthcare teams to provide safe patient care. These experiences have strengthened the importance of humility, teamwork, accountability, and lifelong learning. It has also strengthened my desire to continue to grow as a nurse leader that inspires colleagues while advocating for patients and families.
